1. When does the NEDC collect information about individuals?
We usually collect individual information as a result of one of these actions:
* When you access the NEDC website;
* When you send us a letter via the Contact form on our website; and
* When you have publicized information about military conflicts in North Caucasus, including in print media or online.
2. What is recorded when using the NEDC website?
Website analytics
When you visit the NEDC website, we employ Matomo Analytics to analyze your use of the website. The purpose of this analysis is to develop statistics that are used to improve and further develop our information services on the site. Examples of the collected statistics include the number of visitors of the different pages, data from IP addresses, states from where users access the website, Internet providers, the length of the visit, and which browsers are being used to access the site.
The information is processed in an anonymized form. Anonymized means that we cannot trace the individual information of a user. The data gathered does not identify you personally.
Collection of such anonymized information about the use of the website is necessary in order to provide qualitative website services for users accessing the NEDC website and to monitor interest in the NEDC website.
Website cookies
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your computer or mobile device when you visit the site.

3. What is recorded when you contact us?
If you would like to send us a message, a Contact form can be filled out on the NEDC website (https://www.nedc-nhc.org/contact/). Your name, your e-mail address and the content of your message will be stored once you submit the form. We use TLS encryption to secure our email communications. If your e-mail does not support TLS encryption, a secure connection may not be available (both the sender and the recipient need to use TLS encryption to create a secure connection).
When you contact us, we process and store necessary information in order to respond to your query. We will record the content of your query, your name, our reply and your e-mail address.
This is conducted in accordance with Article 6(1)(a) of the General Data Protection Regulation, which allows us to process information based on the data subject’s consent; Article 6(1)(d), which allows us to process information to protect the vital interests of the data subject or of another natural person; and Article 6(1)(e), which allows us to process information necessary for the task carried out in the interests of the public. If your inquiry contains special categories of personal information, this falls under Article 9(2)(g).
This information can be shared with the NEDC partners, state authorities or international organizations in order to provide the services or information necessary to respond to your enquiry or to carry out a task in the interests of the public.
This information will be retained for as long as is necessary to respond adequately to the request, to undertake activities which are possible and necessary to protect the vital interests of the data subject or of another natural person, or activities possible and necessary to carry out a task in the interests of the public. In addition, the information may be retained for as long as is necessary to fulfil our reporting and transparency obligations.
If data is processed on the basis of Article 6(1)(a) of the General Data Protection Regulation (relating to the data subject’s consent), you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time, however this does not affect the lawfulness of the processing of data prior to the withdrawal of your consent.
4. Public information about human rights violations
We process information about the circumstances of human rights violations committed during military conflicts. This information is obtained from publicly available sources (books, newspapers, reports, other publications, diaries, press-releases, mass media, websites etc.)
This data may include information relating to the victim; the circumstances of the violation; the extent of the injury or loss; the motivation behind the violation; the state of health of the victim; measures of redress undertaken after the violation; legal representatives; and relatives.
This information is anonymized and presented to the public via the NEDC website.
The purpose of processing and publishing this information is to satisfy the public interest of being informed about the scope of violations committed during the military conflicts, to assess the suffering and damages incurred, and to preserve the historical memory of the victims.
During the analytical process, we also store information about the authors of various publications on the military conflicts in the North Caucasus (such as the name of the author, their position, and the media channel through which the information was published), if such information is available.
The purpose of processing information about authors and their publications is to store data relating to the sources of the NEDC’s research which has been used to satisfy the public interest of being informed about the scope of violations committed during the military conflicts, to assess the suffering and damages incurred, and to preserve the historical memory of the victims. Information about these sources and the publications will be retained during the entire activity of the NEDC.
5. Privacy policy of other websites
The NEDC website contains links to other websites. Our privacy policy only applies to our website. Therefore, if you click on a link taking you to another website, it is recommended that you read the respective privacy policy of that website.
6. Your rights
You can exercise your rights by sending an e-mail via the Contact form found on our website. You are entitled to a response without undue delay and within 30 days of submitting your form.
